we did some
During our ‘body’ theme, children looked at some of the body’s main functions.  They produced annotated illustrations and presented their efforts to their class.

As we learned about the solar system, we also explored a number of ways to produce papier-mache models. The children in this class made all the decisions themselves after a number of investigations into the best glue, paper, and construction techniques.
Each planet was proportionally correct (we couldn’t manage the Sun) and fact files were included in the display.
Children were introduced to the theme ‘structures’ by being challenged to work cooperatively to build the highest tower using marshmallows and wooden grill skewers.
As the nights started to get longer, we did some research on Santa as part of our Christmas theme. The children wrote biographies of the great man.
As an introduction to our ‘settlements’ theme, this class was challenged to collaborate in pairs to build houses out of paper. The children were encouraged to be as creative as they could be. The real challenge was the planning stage; it was the only time they were allowed to talk. This really helped the children to think ahead and split tasks into small steps and allocate them carefully.
